Researchers using advanced satellite imagery have produced the most detailed map ever created of glacial retreat in northern Pakistan. The analysis reveals that Pakistan's glaciers are retreating at an accelerating rate, with significant implications for the country's water security and disaster preparedness.

Findings

The study, conducted by Pakistani and international scientists, found that the country's largest glaciers have lost between 15 and 30 percent of their surface area over the past two decades. The rate of retreat has accelerated significantly in recent years, driven by rising temperatures.

The research identifies over 3,000 glacial lakes that have formed as a result of melting ice, many of which pose risks of catastrophic flooding if their natural dams fail. The 2022 floods, which devastated much of the country, were partly attributed to glacial lake outburst events.

Policy Implications

The findings underscore the urgent need for Pakistan to invest in glacier monitoring systems, early warning networks and climate adaptation infrastructure. The researchers recommend the establishment of a national glacial monitoring centre to track changes in real-time.

The study was published in a leading international journal and has been cited by the United Nations as an important contribution to understanding climate change impacts in South Asia.
